Five glasses

Five of the fifty. One complaint each, four things in each, and the hour it works — because the same glass at the wrong hour does nothing at all.

The notebook open on a page headed five glasses: five drawn glasses labelled neck, feet, 3 pm, knees and 3 am, a sketch of a blood vessel, a clock

The page these five come from. Number five, cold feet, is on the front page.

1 Your neck will not turn in the morning

When one hour before bed. The night before, not the morning itself.

Cherries damp down the inflammation that rises while you sleep, and they carry their own melatonin, so you sleep deeper for it. Lime gives you the vitamin C your body builds connective tissue with — and the ligaments in your neck are made of exactly that. Ginger works on the same inflammation by a different road. Honey keeps your blood sugar level through the night so you do not jolt awake at three.

Avoid alcohol in the evening. It costs you the precise hours this works in.

Why your neck is stiff: the fluid in a joint thickens when nothing moves it, the same way ketchup sits solid in the bottle until you shake it. And in exactly those hours your body turns its inflammation up, while cortisol — your own brake — does not arrive until around eight. You wake up in the gap.

7 The three o'clock slump

When early afternoon. And walk ten minutes with it.

Green tea carries something alongside its caffeine that takes the sharp edge off: you get the alertness without the drop afterwards. Lemon helps the absorption. Ginger keeps digestion moving so lunch does not flatten you. Honey is a floor, not a spike.

Avoid the heavy starchy lunch followed by sitting still. That is the slump.

13 Knees that hurt on the stairs

When daily, in the evening. Give it six weeks.

Ginger and turmeric work on the same inflammatory pathway as the tablet in the cupboard — slower and weaker, but without the damage to your stomach lining. The black pepper is not for flavour: without it your body absorbs almost none of the turmeric. The fat in the milk does the same job.

Avoid judging it after three days. This is not a painkiller.

17 Awake at three and not going back

When half an hour before bed.

A dip in blood sugar during the night sends your stress hormone up, and that is what wakes you. Honey keeps your liver's store topped up until morning. Cinnamon flattens the swing. Chamomile and warm milk do the rest.

Avoid alcohol as a sleeping aid. You fall asleep faster and you wake at three, reliably.

11 Ankles that are thick by evening

When in the afternoon, not just before bed.

Coconut water is full of potassium, and potassium is the counterweight to the salt that holds water in your tissue. Parsley helps your kidneys let it go. Cucumber brings water with minerals rather than water alone. Lemon makes it drinkable.

Avoid making dinner the saltiest moment of your day. And eat pumpkin seeds alongside: short of magnesium, your kidneys leak that potassium straight back out.
